Well-marked low pressure over Bay of Bengal triggers rain alert in 15 Odisha districts
Bhubaneswar, Feb 24: A well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified weather activity across Odisha, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue a yellow warning for rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in 15 districts.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the system formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal and is likely to move west-northwestwards. Under its influence, districts including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Ganjam and Gajapati are expected to receive light to moderate rain with thunder over the next two days. Coastal and western Odisha may also witness similar weather conditions.
Koraput town has already experienced light rain with thunderstorms since Sunday evening, with showers reported in Jeypore, Pattangi, Semiliguda and Nandapur. Meanwhile, a Kalbaisakhi storm lashed Subarnapur district, uprooting trees and blowing away asbestos roofs.
In Bargarh district, sudden heavy rain and hailstorms have damaged paddy, vegetable and rabi crops extensively, causing hardship for farmers. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as unseasonal rain continues to disrupt normal life.
