Chennai–New Jalpaiguri Express derails near Jakhapura, no casualties reported
Bhubaneswar, Feb 5: In a rail safety scare, three coaches of the Chennai–New Jalpaiguri Express derailed near Jakhapura railway station in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Thursday morning. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported, officials from East Coast Railway (ECoR) confirmed.
According to an official release, the incident involved Train No. 22611 (MAS–NJP) Chennai–New Jalpaiguri Express and occurred at around 8:51 am while the train was passing through Jajpur Yard. One AC coach and two General coaches slipped off the tracks within yard limits. Railway authorities stated that the train was moving at a very slow speed at the time, which helped avert a major mishap.
Immediately after receiving information, Accident Relief Trains (ARTs) from Bhubaneswar and Khurda Road, along with Accident Relief Medical Equipment (ARME) from Khurda Road, were dispatched by 8:53 am for rescue and restoration operations.
Senior railway officials rushed to the site and are supervising track restoration and safety assessments. Efforts are underway to normalize train movement. The exact cause of the derailment remains under investigation, officials added.
