OPCC suspends three MLAs over cross-voting in Rajya Sabha polls
Bhubaneswar, Mar 17: The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) on Tuesday suspended three of its legislators—Ramesh Chandra Jena, Dasarathi Gamango, and Sofia Firdous—for allegedly violating party discipline during the Rajya Sabha elections held on March 16.
According to an official statement, the MLAs were found to have acted against the party’s ideology by supporting candidates backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The OPCC said their actions undermined the Congress party’s position in the crucial election and weakened its collective stance in the state.
The disciplinary action was taken after a detailed review of the incident, with the party concluding that the legislators’ conduct was detrimental to its interests and internal unity. The OPCC emphasised that adherence to party principles and direction is essential for maintaining organisational strength.
Reaffirming its commitment to discipline, the Congress leadership warned that any deviation from the party line would invite strict consequences. The move, it said, aims to preserve the integrity of the party and ensure cohesive functioning of its legislative wing in Odisha.
