Odisha imposes 61-day fishing ban along coastline
Bhubaneswar, April 15: The Odisha Fisheries Department has enforced a 61-day fishing ban along the state’s coastline from April 15 to June 14, 2026, as part of efforts to conserve marine resources and ensure sustainable fishing practices.
As per the government directive, all mechanised boats and trawlers are barred from venturing into the sea during this period. However, traditional and small motorised boats up to 8.5 metres in length have been exempted from the restriction.
The annual ban is imposed during the crucial breeding and spawning season of fish and other marine species. Officials said the move is necessary to allow marine life to reproduce safely, thereby boosting fish populations and maintaining ecological balance. The period also coincides with rough sea conditions, making deep-sea fishing risky.
While the measure is environmentally significant, it is expected to impact the livelihoods of thousands of fisherfolk, particularly in coastal districts such as Ganjam district. Many families in these regions rely entirely on daily fishing for their income and may face financial strain during the ban period.
Authorities have warned that violations will invite strict action under the Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act, including seizure of boats.
