Dense fog paralyzes Bhubaneswar, visibility drops to zero
Bhubaneswar, Jan 3: A thick blanket of dense fog engulfed Bhubaneswar on Saturday morning, bringing visibility down to zero meters and causing major disruptions, particularly to air travel. The sudden weather condition severely affected movement across the city, with motorists and commuters facing difficulties during early morning hours.
Meteorologist Umashankar Dash described the fog as extremely dense, confirming that visibility in the capital region had dropped to zero meters. Taking to his official X handle, Dash posted, “Visible Distance #Zero Meters. In the Capital #Bhubaneswar region, visibility dropped to 0 meters amid extremely dense fog,” highlighting the severity of the situation.
The dense fog significantly impacted operations at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA), leading to delays in several scheduled flights. According to airport sources, flights to and from destinations such as Goa, Kolkata, Guwahati, Utkela, Jaipur, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai were delayed by nearly two to two-and-a-half hours. Visibility at the airport was recorded at just 50 meters around 6:30 am, making safe take-offs and landings difficult.
Passengers were seen waiting at the airport for updated flight information, while airlines issued advisories regarding possible delays. Weather officials have advised people to exercise caution while travelling during early morning hours as foggy conditions may persist.
