Odisha CM launches major road safety push, unveils projects worth ₹6,700 crore
Bhubaneswar, Jan 12: Marking National Road Safety Month, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday unveiled a comprehensive set of initiatives aimed at improving road safety, modernising urban transport systems and accelerating infrastructure development across the state. The Chief Minister also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple projects with a combined investment of over ₹6,700 crore.
Addressing a state-level programme at the Convention Hall of Lok Seva Bhawan, Majhi expressed deep concern over the rising incidence of road accidents in Odisha as well as across the country. He appealed to citizens to strictly follow traffic rules and adopt responsible road behaviour, stressing that road safety would be treated as an integral part of good governance from now on. The government, he said, would pursue the issue with greater seriousness, coordination and accountability.
Outlining the state’s road safety roadmap, the Chief Minister said it is based on the four globally recognised ‘E’s—Education, Enforcement, Engineering and Emergency response. These focus on awareness and training, strict enforcement of traffic laws, improved road and vehicle engineering, and timely medical response during accidents.
Expanding the approach, Majhi announced the addition of two more ‘E’s—Environment and Evaluation. While Environment will emphasise enforcement of pollution norms and promotion of cleaner mobility, Evaluation will focus on reviewing outcomes, identifying gaps and refining road safety policies for better results.
