AICC expels senior Congress leader Mohammed Moquim over ‘anti-party activities’
Bhubaneswar, Dec 15: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has expelled senior Congress leader and former Barabati-Cuttack MLA Mohammed Moquim from the primary membership of the party with immediate effect. The decision was approved by the AICC on the recommendation of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), citing Moquim’s alleged “anti-party activities”.
According to an official press release issued by the OPCC, the disciplinary action comes in the wake of Moquim’s recent remarks questioning the party’s leadership and organisational direction following the Congress defeat in the Nuapada by-election. The party leadership viewed his statements as detrimental to party discipline at a critical time.
Earlier, Moquim had written a strongly worded letter to former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, calling for what he described as an “open-heart surgery” of the party and a deep structural and ideological renewal. In the letter, he warned that the Congress was at risk of losing its legacy if urgent corrective measures were not taken.
He also referred to six consecutive electoral defeats in Odisha and recent losses in other states, pointing to a growing emotional disconnect between the leadership and grassroots workers. Moquim further expressed disappointment over not getting an opportunity to meet Rahul Gandhi for nearly three years.
