IMD issues red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Odisha
Bhubaneswar, July 3: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Warning for several districts in Odisha, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by extremely heavy showers at isolated places over the next two days due to the influence of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
For July 4, the IMD has placed Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri under a Red Alert, warning of extremely heavy rainfall that could lead to waterlogging and flash floods. An Orange Warning has also been issued for Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Gajapati and Ganjam, where heavy to very heavy rain is expected. Meanwhile, 17 other districts, including Balasore, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Sundargarh and Mayurbhanj, are under a Yellow Warning for heavy rainfall at isolated places.
The weather system is expected to shift eastward on July 5, with Sambalpur, Angul, Sonepur, Boudh and Kandhamal placed under Red Alert. Orange Warnings have been issued for Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam and Nayagarh, while 16 other districts remain under Yellow Alert.
The IMD has further predicted that rainfall activity will remain concentrated over northern Odisha from July 6 to July 8, with Orange Warnings for Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
The weather office has advised district administrations to remain on high alert for possible flash floods, waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Residents in vulnerable areas have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and follow official advisories.
