Nandankanan set to welcome African cheetahs for the first time; preparations in final stages
Bhubaneswar, Dec 5: Nandankanan Zoological Park is gearing up to welcome African cheetahs for the first time in its history, marking a significant milestone for the renowned zoo. The introduction of these magnificent animals—known as the fastest land mammals—has generated excitement among wildlife lovers, as Nandankanan currently houses no cheetahs in its collection.
To accommodate the new arrivals, construction of a specialised cheetah enclosure is progressing rapidly. Zoo authorities have confirmed that the habitat is being developed in line with international standards to ensure a safe and stimulating environment for the animals.
A dedicated visitor gallery is also being built to offer an unobstructed and secure viewing experience. To enhance visibility, a premium glass viewing panel imported from Thailand will soon be installed, giving the enclosure a world-class touch.
In addition, the enclosure is being enriched with herbivorous species to encourage natural hunting instincts, helping the cheetahs display behaviours similar to those seen in the wild. With their extraordinary speed—capable of reaching up to 120 kmph—the cheetahs are expected to become one of Nandankanan’s star attractions.
As preparations near completion, the arrival of African cheetahs is set to elevate the zoo’s profile and draw in larger crowds in the coming months.
