Man and woman attempt self-immolation in Mayurbhanj; woman dies, man critical

Bhubaneswar, Aug 2: In a deeply disturbing incident, a man and a woman allegedly attempted to end their lives by setting themselves on fire in a paddy field at Khiching village under Raruan police limits in Mayurbhanj district on Saturday morning.
According to sources, the duo poured petrol on themselves and ignited the fire, shocking nearby villagers who rushed to their rescue. Both victims sustained severe burn injuries and were immediately taken to Sukruli Hospital in critical condition.
The woman, identified as Bharati Patra, could not survive the injuries and was declared dead by the doctors. The man, Harishankar Acharya, who also suffered extensive burns, was initially treated at Sukruli Hospital. However, as his condition worsened, he was referred to the District Headquarters Hospital in Keonjhar for advanced medical care.
While the exact reason behind this extreme act remains unknown, local police have begun an investigation. Authorities are examining possible causes, including personal or family-related issues, and are recording statements from locals and relatives to uncover the motive behind the tragic incident.
