Contract worker crushed to death by slag at Rourkela Steel Plant, unions demand justice

Bhubaneswar, July 21: In a heart-wrenching accident at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on Monday, a contractual worker lost his life after being crushed by a massive chunk of slag in the Steel Melting Shop-2 (SMS-2). The deceased, identified as 45-year-old Abhiram Mahato of Bisra Jareikela, was on duty during the morning A-shift when the tragedy occurred around 9 AM.
According to sources, Mahato, who was engaged through a private contractor from Basanti Colony, was cutting jammed slag on a platform when approximately two tonnes of slag suddenly collapsed onto him. The force of the impact left him critically injured.
He was immediately rushed to the RSP’s primary health center and later shifted to Ispat General Hospital (IGH). Despite medical efforts, he was declared dead upon arrival at IGH.
The incident triggered strong reactions among labour unions, which gathered at the hospital demanding adequate compensation for Mahato’s family and a job for his next of kin. Tension prevailed at the IGH premises as union leaders called for enhanced safety measures and accountability. The deceased’s body is currently kept at the IGH morgue for postmortem.
