Schools reopen in Jajpur after diarrhoea scare; jaundice cases now raise fresh concerns

Bhubaneswar, June 25: Schools in Odisha’s Jajpur district reopened today after a temporary shutdown due to a diarrhoea outbreak that had triggered widespread concern. The closure, extended for five extra days on the instructions of the District Collector, was aimed at ensuring the safety of students and curbing further spread of the disease.
Ahead of reopening, school premises underwent rigorous cleaning and sanitation measures. Special emphasis was placed on purifying drinking water sources in all educational institutions. The District Education Officer coordinated closely with Block Education Officers, with the Collector personally monitoring the water safety protocols to ensure compliance.
While students stayed home during the extended closure, teachers were instructed to attend school as part of the ongoing health and preparedness measures.
However, just as the situation seemed under control, fresh cases of jaundice have now been reported in parts of the district, raising new public health concerns. In response, the Health Department has launched intensive health camps in the affected villages. To trace the cause of the outbreaks, officials collected 15 blood samples, 10 stool samples, and 4 water samples on Monday. Further results are awaited to guide the next steps in containment.
