Odisha likely to receive early monsoon, confirms IMD chief

Bhubaneswar, May 26: Odisha is expected to receive the southwest monsoon earlier than its usual timeline this year, according to Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Speaking to reporters on Monday, Dr. Mohapatra stated that while the monsoon typically arrives in Odisha between June 12 and 14, this year’s onset may occur sooner.
“We will announce the exact date within the next two days,” he said, attributing the early monsoon to favorable atmospheric conditions and the likely formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to boost rainfall activity in Odisha, which is already experiencing pre-monsoon showers.
The southwest monsoon has already made an early onset in Kerala, arriving eight days ahead of schedule. It has also advanced to parts of Mumbai and the northeastern states, signaling rapid progress across the country.
According to IMD predictions, the monsoon is expected to enter southeastern Odisha within the next three days. It will then continue its journey toward the northeastern states, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.
