Ama Bus services disrupted as staff protest assault on driver and conductor in Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar, May 13: Bus services under the Ama Bus initiative came to a halt on Tuesday after staff members staged a protest at Master Canteen Square in Bhubaneswar, demanding stronger safety measures following an alleged assault on a conductor and driver.
According to the protesting staff, the driver of Route No. 23 was attacked near Bhubaneswar Railway Station while en route to SUM Hospital. A group of 5 to 7 individuals reportedly assaulted the driver over a dispute related to roadside dust. The altercation turned violent, and the driver sustained a head injury. He was immediately rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for treatment.
“This is not the first time we’ve faced violence. We begin our shifts as early as 5 a.m. and return late at night. No one deserves to be attacked while on duty,” said a conductor during the protest.
The staff warned that bus services would remain affected unless authorities took immediate action. They demanded the arrest of the attackers and assurance of future safety.
Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) confirmed in a press release that bus guide Trilochana Parida was assaulted within depot premises. CCTV footage has been reviewed, and an FIR has been filed as the investigation continues.
