Student dies after setting herself on fire, police probe domestic abuse

Bhubaneswar, Oct 8: A young woman named Rani Pradhan, who set herself on fire by pouring kerosene over her body on Monday night, tragically died while receiving treatment on Tuesday morning in Odisha's Ganjam district. The incident occurred in the Kukudakhandi block under the Berhampur Sadar police station limits.
Rani, a student of Mahamayi Women’s College in Gandhinagar, set herself ablaze in front of a chicken coop near her rented house opposite the Kukudakhandi block office. Locals who witnessed the incident rescued her and rushed her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries the next day.
While the exact cause of her self-immolation is still unclear, it is suspected that she was driven to take this drastic step due to domestic problems, particularly the abuse from her alcoholic father. The police have detained and are interrogating the father as part of their investigation into the incident.
