Odisha implements coastline fishing ban for two months
Bhubaneswar, April 15: The Odisha government has initiated a two-month prohibition on coastline fishing to safeguard fish populations during their breeding period.
Enforced under Section 4 of the Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act, the ban prohibits mechanized vessels from fishing along the Odisha coast from April 14 to June 14. Fishermen and trawl operators are instructed to refrain from fishing activities during this period.
The ban encompasses waters up to 12 nautical miles off the Odisha coast, while non-mechanized small boats measuring less than 8.5 meters are exempt.
Covering the entire 480 km coastal stretch of Odisha, the 60-day ban aims to prevent disruptions caused by trawlers during the breeding season. Jagannath Rao, Additional Director of Fisheries at Kujang, stated, "The ban aims to mitigate disturbances caused by trawlers during the breeding season. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea during this period." Any violation of the ban will face strict legal consequences, including confiscation of fishing vessels.
Implemented annually, the fishing ban serves the broader interest of coastal communities dependent on fishing activities. While the ban may initially impact fishermen and stakeholders, officials anticipate long-term benefits in the form of increased catch yields. Despite challenges posed by frequent low-pressure systems and cyclonic weather, resulting in fishing suspensions, officials believe the ban will ultimately bolster the fishing industry and its associated livelihoods.
