BJP postpones state president and national council elections after Puri stampede tragedy

Bhubaneswar, June 30: In the wake of the tragic stampede during the Rath Yatra festivities in Puri, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has postponed its upcoming organisational elections in Odisha. The incident, which claimed the lives of three devotees, has prompted the party to delay the election process as a mark of respect for the victims and their families.
Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi, who has been appointed as the state returning officer for the BJP’s organisational polls, officially announced the postponement. The elections for the state BJP president and national council members were initially scheduled to commence on July 1. However, following the unfortunate event in Puri, the party has decided to halt all related activities temporarily.
According to party sources, the election process was originally planned to begin on June 29 and span three days. BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal had been appointed as the observer for the election procedure.
Sarangi stated that the new dates for the polls will be decided after consultations with central leadership. The party is closely monitoring the situation and will reassess before finalising the revised schedule.
