Odisha introduces new student assessment system for classes III to VIII
Bhubaneswar, July 6: The Odisha School and Mass Education Department has introduced a new assessment framework for students studying in government and government-aided schools, aiming to strengthen continuous evaluation and improve learning outcomes. Under the revised system, students from Classes III to VIII will undergo four mandatory assessments during every academic year.
According to a notification issued by the Directorate of Teacher Education and the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), the academic year will now be divided into two terms. The first term will extend from April to September, while the second term will cover the period from October to March.
As part of the new evaluation pattern, students will appear for two Formative Assessments (FA-1 and FA-2) and two Summative Assessments (SA-1 and SA-2). Each formative assessment will carry 25 marks per subject, while each summative assessment will be conducted for 50 marks per subject. The department said the revised system is designed to monitor students' academic progress more effectively through a combination of continuous assessment and term-end examinations.
For students of Classes I and II, the department has completely done away with formal written examinations. Instead, teachers will assess children through daily classroom observations and record their learning progress every month in a specially designed 'Learning Ladder Register'. The initiative is expected to promote activity-based learning and help teachers identify individual learning needs at an early stage while ensuring a stress-free learning environment for young students.
