‘SBI Sanjeevani – Clinic on Wheels’ brings free healthcare to remote Odisha villages

Bhubaneswar, June 25: In a significant step towards strengthening primary healthcare in Odisha’s remote regions, the People to People Health Foundation (PPHF), with CSR support from the SBI Foundation, is successfully implementing the SBI Sanjeevani – Clinic on Wheels program.

This initiative delivers free and essential medical services to underserved populations in 60 hard-to-reach villages across the districts of Balangir, Dhenkanal, and Nuapada. Launched under the health vertical of the SBI Foundation, the program works in alignment with government efforts to enhance rural health infrastructure.

Each mobile medical unit is equipped with a team comprising a doctor, pharmacist, lab technician, auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM), and driver-cum-attendant. These units operate on a fixed monthly schedule, visiting every village at least twice a month to ensure consistent access to quality healthcare at the grassroots level.

In its first year, the program has made remarkable strides by conducting 1,590 Mobile OPD sessions—surpassing its target—and treating 35,672 patients, achieving 113% of the planned outreach. Notably, 59% of the beneficiaries were women, highlighting the program’s strong emphasis on maternal and child healthcare. Additionally, 2,696 antenatal check-ups were conducted to support prenatal care, while over 12,990 diagnostic tests were performed, contributing to early disease detection and improved treatment outcomes.

The initiative also reached 7,703 individuals through health awareness camps, using robust Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) strategies to promote positive health-seeking behavior.

Beyond routine services, the SBI Sanjeevani program has conducted Swachh Bharat Abhiyan activities and quarterly specialized health camps tailored to the needs of local communities. These supplementary efforts focus on early diagnosis, preventive care, and improving health literacy among vulnerable groups such as tribal populations, women, senior citizens, and schoolchildren.

“This initiative reflects our deep commitment to building locally driven, sustainable healthcare solutions that transform lives,” said Alok Chandra Mohanty, Director-Programs at PPHF. “In partnership with the SBI Foundation, we are addressing critical gaps in primary care and bringing essential services directly to those who need them the most.”

The SBI Sanjeevani – Clinic on Wheels program stands as a successful model of collaborative public health intervention, contributing meaningfully to Sustainable Development Goals—particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
