SJTA secures trademark approval for five sacred Jagannath Temple terms
Bhubaneswar, July 23: In a significant move to safeguard the religious heritage and cultural identity of the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has secured approval for five more trademark applications associated with the 12th-century shrine. The development is being seen as another important step towards preventing the unauthorised commercial use of sacred names and symbols linked to Lord Jagannath.
Sharing the update on social media platform X, Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple, Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, announced that the trademark applications have successfully cleared the second stage of examination and have now been approved for publication in the upcoming Trademark Journal.
The five terms that have received approval are Jagannath Dham, Shree Khetra, Mahaprasad, Neelachakra, and Koili Baikuntha—all of which hold immense religious, cultural and historical significance for millions of devotees across the world.
Dr. Padhee described the development as a "significant success" in the ongoing efforts to preserve the sanctity, identity and heritage of Shree Jagannath Temple. He said the initiative is aimed at protecting these revered names from misuse, misrepresentation and unauthorised commercial exploitation.
The SJTA has been actively pursuing trademark registration of sacred temple-related terms to ensure they are used only in an appropriate religious and cultural context. Earlier, the administration had also secured trademark protection for several other names and expressions associated with the temple and its rituals.
Temple officials believe the move will strengthen legal safeguards for the shrine's intellectual and cultural heritage while preserving its authenticity for future generations.
