Class X student dies by suicide after dispute over mobile phone in Cuttack; mother critical after consuming poison

Bhubaneswar, July 23: A tragic incident unfolded in Cuttack district on Thursday when a 15-year-old boy allegedly died by suicide following a dispute with his mother over mobile phone use on the first death anniversary of his father. Hours later, his grief-stricken mother allegedly attempted to end her life by consuming poison and is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition.

The incident took place at Hatikhana village under the jurisdiction of Jagatpur police station. The deceased has been identified as Ayushman Sahu (15), popularly known as Somu, son of late Subas Chandra Sahu. He was a Class X student of Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir, Purbakhachha, and was known for his talent in dance. Recently, he had won a junior category award in a local television dance and acting competition titled Tike Dance Tike Acting.

According to reports, the family was observing the first death anniversary rituals of Somu's father. As he was watching videos on his mobile phone around 9 am, his mother reportedly scolded him and took away the device. Upset over the incident, the teenager allegedly consumed pesticide kept in the house.

Family members rushed him to a private hospital in Jagatpur before shifting him to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Unable to cope with the shock of losing her only son, Somu's mother allegedly consumed poison. Neighbours immediately shifted her to a nearby private hospital, where she remains under treatment.

Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
