IUCAW to probe Rayagada mob attack case; incident placed under ‘Red Flag’ category

Bhubaneswar, June 22: The Investigative Units on Crime Against Women (IUCAW) will take over the investigation into the recent mob attack on two fellowship workers in Rayagada district, Inspector General (IG) of the Crime Against Women and Children Wing (CAW&CW), Shyni S, announced on Monday.

Addressing the media, the IG said the case has been categorized as a “Red Flag” matter due to its serious nature and has been transferred to IUCAW for a focused and sensitive investigation. Specially trained officers have been directed to conduct the probe, while senior officials will closely monitor every stage of the investigation and subsequent trial.

Shyni S assured that all necessary assistance would be extended to the woman victim and emphasized that justice for the victims would remain the top priority. She also appealed to the public and media not to spread or believe rumours, warning that mob violence based on unverified allegations is a punishable offence.

The incident occurred on June 16 when two fellowship workers travelling from Daringbadi in Kandhamal district to Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi reportedly lost their way and entered Rayagada’s Kalyansinghpur area. After interacting with villagers and distributing chocolates to children during Raja celebrations, rumours spread that they were child lifters. The misinformation quickly triggered panic, leading to the formation of a mob that allegedly assaulted the duo despite their attempts to establish their identity and explain their purpose.
