Over 22 Lakh Students Take NEET-UG 2026 Re-Examination Amid Enhanced Security

New Delhi, June 22: More than 22 lakh students across India appeared for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination on Saturday, marking one of the largest entrance tests ever conducted in the country. The National Testing Agency (NTA) organized the re-test after the original examination held on May 3 was cancelled following allegations of a nationwide question paper leak.

The re-examination was conducted at thousands of centres across India and several overseas locations under extensive security arrangements. Authorities implemented advanced monitoring measures, including biometric verification, AI-assisted surveillance, CCTV coverage, and strict identity checks to ensure a fair and transparent examination process.

The decision to hold a fresh examination came after investigations into the paper leak controversy raised concerns about the integrity of the original test. The incident sparked widespread protests from students and parents, leading the government to order a re-exam to safeguard the interests of medical aspirants.

According to officials, the examination proceeded smoothly in most parts of the country. Security personnel were deployed at centres to prevent malpractice and maintain order. Question papers were transported under strict supervision, while candidates underwent multiple levels of verification before entering examination halls.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan reiterated the government's commitment to restoring confidence in the examination system. He stated that every possible measure had been taken to ensure that deserving students receive a fair opportunity to compete for medical college admissions.

The controversy surrounding NEET-UG 2026 has placed significant emotional and academic pressure on students. Many candidates had already spent months preparing for the original examination and were required to revisit their studies for the re-test. Education experts noted that the uncertainty created by the cancellation had increased stress levels among aspirants.

In a gesture widely appreciated by students and parents, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly adjusted his travel schedule to avoid traffic disruptions that could affect candidates travelling to examination centres on the day of the re-test.

NEET-UG remains the primary gateway for admission to undergraduate medical and dental courses across India. With competition remaining intense and only a limited number of seats available, the examination plays a crucial role in shaping the careers of aspiring doctors.

The NTA is expected to begin the evaluation process shortly and announce the results in the coming weeks. The results will determine admissions to medical institutions across the country for the 2026-27 academic session.

The successful conduct of the re-examination is being viewed as an important step toward restoring public confidence in India's competitive examination system after one of the most significant testing controversies in recent years.
