Wanted Highway Robber Arrested After Gunfight with Police in Odisha
Puri, May 31: A wanted highway robbery suspect was apprehended by Odisha Police following a brief exchange of gunfire in Puri district late Saturday night.
The accused, identified as Bishnu Jena, was reportedly involved in several highway robbery cases and had been on the police radar for some time. Acting on intelligence inputs, a police team launched an operation near Shree Setu Road after receiving information that a group of criminals was planning to carry out a robbery in the area.
As police moved in to intercept the suspects, the group attempted to flee on motorcycles. During the chase, Jena's motorcycle reportedly lost balance and skidded on the road. After falling from the vehicle, he allegedly opened fire at the police personnel in an effort to escape.
In response, the police retaliated with controlled firing. Jena sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the exchange and was immediately taken into custody. No police personnel were reported injured in the incident.
Following his arrest, the injured suspect was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Puri for initial treatment. Due to the nature of his injuries, he was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced medical care.
Police officials stated that Jena was wanted in multiple cases related to highway robberies and other criminal activities. His arrest is being viewed as a significant breakthrough in efforts to curb highway crimes in the region.
Authorities have also launched further investigations to identify and trace other members of the gang who managed to escape during the operation. Police are examining whether the group was involved in recent robbery incidents reported from different parts of the state.
