TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee Alleges Attack Amid Escalating Political Tensions in West Bengal

Political tensions in West Bengal intensified on Saturday after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee claimed he was attacked in Hooghly district while attempting to submit a memorandum to local authorities over recent incidents of post-election violence.

According to Banerjee, the incident took place near Chanditala Police Station, where a group of individuals allegedly confronted him and his supporters. The TMC leader said he sustained injuries during the altercation and received medical attention afterward. Party leaders accused BJP supporters of orchestrating the attack, describing it as an attempt to intimidate opposition voices.

The alleged assault on Kalyan Banerjee came just a day after another high-profile incident involving TMC national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee. During a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas, Abhishek Banerjee was reportedly met by a hostile crowd. Reports indicated that stones and eggs were thrown during the confrontation, forcing security personnel to intervene.

The back-to-back incidents have triggered a fresh political confrontation between the ruling TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). TMC leaders condemned the attacks and accused the BJP of encouraging violence against party representatives. Senior party figures demanded strict action against those responsible and called for enhanced security for elected representatives.

The BJP, however, rejected the allegations and denied any involvement in either incident. Party leaders accused the TMC of attempting to politicize local disputes and argued that the ruling party was using the events to divert attention from concerns over law and order in the state.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed concern over the reported attack on Kalyan Banerjee and met him following the incident. She criticized what she described as growing political intolerance and reiterated her party's commitment to protecting democratic rights.

The developments come amid heightened political tensions in the state following recent electoral contests. Allegations and counter-allegations of violence have continued to dominate the political landscape, with both major parties accusing each other of provoking unrest.

Authorities have begun examining the circumstances surrounding the incidents. Further investigations are expected as political leaders continue to exchange accusations over responsibility for the clashes.

The latest confrontations have once again highlighted the deeply polarized political environment in West Bengal, where disputes between rival parties frequently escalate into public confrontations.
