Bhubaneswar, July 2: Eight inmates lodged in Jharpada Special Jail have reportedly tested HIV positive, prompting prison authorities to take precautionary measures and seek specialised medical care for the affected prisoners. The development has raised concern among inmates and officials over the need for proper health management within the correctional facility.

According to sources, the jail authorities have written to the Special POCSO Court and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), requesting appropriate medical attention and necessary support for the HIV-positive inmates. The communication also emphasised the need to ensure proper monitoring and healthcare facilities for those infected.

The matter reportedly came to light after an accused in a rape case, who was produced before the court by the Mahila Police Station, was found to be HIV positive. Following the diagnosis, authorities initiated further assessments, during which several other inmates were also identified as HIV positive.

Jail officials have expressed concern over the possibility of exposure to blood during certain shared activities, such as group shaving using common equipment, and have urged that adequate precautions be adopted to eliminate any risk of transmission. Health experts note that HIV is not spread through casual contact, but proper infection-control practices are essential wherever there is a possibility of blood exposure.

Authorities have begun an inquiry into the matter and are expected to review health protocols within the prison. Further details regarding the condition of the inmates and additional preventive measures are awaited as the investigation continues.
