PM Modi Highlights Odisha’s Suvarnarekha Mango and Bael Pana in Mann Ki Baat

Bhubaneswar : Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Odisha’s famous Suvarnarekha mango and the traditional drink Bael Pana during the 134th edition of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, bringing national attention to two of the state’s cherished cultural and agricultural treasures.

Addressing listeners across the country, the Prime Minister spoke about India’s rich culinary diversity and the unique food traditions that define different regions. While discussing the country’s wide range of mango varieties, he mentioned the Suvarnarekha mango, a popular fruit cultivated in parts of Odisha and neighboring Andhra Pradesh. Known for its distinctive taste, attractive golden-yellow skin, and sweet aroma, the mango is widely appreciated by consumers and has become an important source of income for local farmers.

Modi noted that the arrival of summer often sparks conversations about mangoes in households across India. He highlighted how every region has developed its own specialty variety, reflecting the nation’s agricultural richness. Along with Suvarnarekha, he referred to several other well-known mango varieties grown across different states, underscoring the diversity of India’s horticultural sector.

The Prime Minister also praised the contribution of mango growers, saying that their hard work has helped Indian fruits gain recognition in international markets. He emphasized that increasing exports of agricultural products not only strengthens the economy but also creates better opportunities for farmers. According to him, Indian mangoes have successfully travelled from local orchards to global destinations, enhancing the country’s reputation as a major producer of quality fruits.

Apart from mangoes, Modi drew attention to traditional Indian beverages that help people stay refreshed during the intense summer heat. Among the drinks he mentioned was Odisha’s iconic Bael Pana, a refreshing preparation made from the pulp of the bael fruit, jaggery, water, and aromatic spices. The beverage is deeply rooted in Odia culture and is particularly associated with the observance of Pana Sankranti, the Odia New Year festival.

The Prime Minister described such traditional drinks as symbols of India’s cultural heritage and collective wisdom. He pointed out that beverages like Bael Pana, Aam Panna, lassi, buttermilk, sattu sherbet, and kokum sherbet have been passed down through generations and continue to play an important role in maintaining health and hydration during the summer season.

Modi further stated that many of these traditional recipes are based on locally available ingredients and reflect sustainable lifestyles practiced in Indian communities for centuries. He encouraged people to appreciate and preserve these indigenous food traditions while embracing healthy alternatives to commercially processed drinks.

The mention of Suvarnarekha mango and Bael Pana on a national platform has been welcomed across Odisha. Farmers, horticulture experts, and cultural enthusiasts believe the recognition will help increase awareness about the state’s unique agricultural products and traditional foods. Many feel that such appreciation from the Prime Minister could boost demand, support local producers, and promote Odisha’s rich culinary identity across the country.

The acknowledgement has also been seen as a matter of pride for the state, highlighting Odisha’s contribution to India’s diverse food culture and agricultural heritage.
