Abhishek Banerjee Attacked by Mob During Visit to Violence-Affected Families in West Bengal

Kolkata, May 30: Tensions escalated in West Bengal on Saturday after Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked by a group of protesters while visiting Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district. The incident occurred just hours after he met the families of party workers reportedly affected by recent post-election violence.

According to reports, Banerjee was traveling through the area as part of an outreach program aimed at expressing solidarity with families who claimed to have suffered due to political clashes following the elections. During the visit, a large crowd gathered along his route, and the situation soon turned chaotic.

Witnesses stated that protesters allegedly hurled eggs and stones at the TMC leader's convoy. Amid the commotion, Banerjee's security personnel formed a protective cordon around him and escorted him away from the crowd. Reports also indicated that his shirt was torn during the confrontation, highlighting the intensity of the clash.

Speaking after the incident, Banerjee alleged that the attack was politically motivated and accused supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the violence. He claimed that some objects thrown by the protesters struck him near the eye, causing minor injuries. The TMC leader described the episode as a deliberate attempt to intimidate him and disrupt his efforts to meet affected families.

Videos circulating on social media showed scenes of unrest, with protesters shouting slogans and security personnel struggling to control the crowd. The footage quickly drew widespread attention and triggered strong reactions from political leaders across the state.

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee strongly condemned the attack. She accused BJP activists of being behind the incident and criticized what she described as growing political aggression in the state. Senior TMC leaders echoed her concerns and demanded strict action against those responsible.

The BJP, however, rejected the allegations. Party leaders denied any involvement in the attack and accused the TMC of attempting to gain political mileage from the incident. BJP representatives claimed that public anger against the ruling party was increasing and argued that the confrontation reflected local dissatisfaction rather than a planned political assault.

The incident has further intensified the ongoing political rivalry between the TMC and BJP in West Bengal. The state has witnessed frequent accusations and counter-accusations of political violence, particularly during and after elections. Both parties continue to blame each other for creating an atmosphere of hostility and unrest.

Following the attack, Banerjee indicated that he may pursue legal action and seek a judicial investigation into the matter. Security arrangements in the region have reportedly been strengthened to prevent further disturbances.

As political tensions remain high, the latest confrontation has once again brought concerns over political violence and public safety to the forefront of West Bengal's political discourse. Authorities are expected to examine video evidence and witness statements as part of the ongoing investigation.
