Mahanadi water dispute hearing advances before tribunal
Bhubaneswar, May 2: The long-pending dispute over sharing of waters of the Mahanadi River between Odisha and Chhattisgarh came up for hearing before the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal, with both states submitting detailed data on river flows during monsoon and non-monsoon seasons.
During the proceedings, the Tribunal was informed about seasonal variations in water availability, in line with its earlier directive. Officials said the next hearing has been scheduled for the 30th of the coming month, raising cautious optimism about progress towards a resolution.
The dispute has persisted for years, with Odisha alleging that upstream projects in Chhattisgarh—including dams and barrages—are restricting the natural flow of the river to downstream areas. The state has repeatedly expressed concern over reduced water availability, especially during lean, non-monsoon months.
Sources indicate that declining inflows during the dry season have significantly affected river conditions in parts of Odisha, with several stretches witnessing sharply reduced water levels.
While the issue remains under judicial review, Odisha has also pushed for an amicable resolution through dialogue. A high-level committee has been formed for this purpose, though field-level discussions are yet to begin.
