Holistic women empowerment key to true progress: CM Majhi
Bhubaneswar, April 30: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday stressed the need for holistic women empowerment, particularly in the political sphere, while addressing a special session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly on ‘Women’s Contribution in Indian Democracy’.
Thanking the Speaker for initiating the discussion, the Chief Minister expressed hope that members would offer meaningful suggestions on strengthening women’s role in governance. He noted that even after 75 years of adopting the Constitution, a large section of women still feels deprived, underscoring the need for broader and more inclusive empowerment.
Criticising the narrow definition of women empowerment, Majhi said it is often limited to financial assistance through Self-Help Groups. “True empowerment goes beyond monetary support. It means enabling women to take independent decisions in their personal, social, and political lives,” he asserted, adding that real empowerment must be social, economic, and political in nature.
Highlighting the achievements of women in modern India, the Chief Minister said they have excelled across diverse fields—from managing households to driving public transport and serving in the armed forces.
He praised the courage and capability of women in defence services, calling them a true reflection of “Nari Shakti” in contemporary India.
