Bhubaneswar, July 29: Odisha is likely to experience a moderate flood in the Mahanadi river system by Friday as heavy inflows from upstream catchments continue to raise water levels, prompting the Water Resources Department to issue a fresh flood alert for several downstream areas. Authorities have warned that low-lying regions along the Mahanadi and Daya rivers could witness small to medium flooding over the next two days.

Briefing mediapersons in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, Engineer-in-Chief of the Water Resources Department, Dillip Kumar Rout, said the water level at the Hirakud reservoir has reached 616 feet following continuous rainfall in the upper catchment areas. He informed that heavy rain in the Tel river basin and adjoining regions of Balangir, Khairamal and Bargarh is expected to generate an inflow of around 7.5 lakh to 9 lakh cusecs at Mundali by Thursday evening.

According to Rout, the increased discharge is likely to result in small to medium floods in the lower reaches of the Mahanadi and Daya rivers by Friday. Low-lying areas of Nimapada, Kanas, Gop and Astaranga are expected to be affected as floodwater enters these regions. District administrations have been advised to remain on high alert and take necessary precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property.

The Engineer-in-Chief also said flood conditions persist in the Baitarani river basin, with inundation reported in Dasrathpur of Jajpur district and Dhamnagar and Chandbali areas. However, he noted that inflows into the Salandi River have started declining and the flood situation in Bhadrak district is likely to improve by Thursday.

Rout further informed that minor breaches have been reported near Anandpur and in Jajpur district. Repair and restoration work will begin once floodwaters recede and conditions become safe for engineering teams. Authorities are continuously monitoring river levels and have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
