Odisha Assembly adjourned till 4 PM amid opposition uproar over SCB fire
Bhubaneswar, Mar 23: Proceedings of the Odisha Legislative Assembly were repeatedly disrupted on Friday, forcing adjournment till 4 PM as Opposition parties intensified protests over the tragic fire at SCB Medical College and Hospital that claimed 12 lives.
Speaker Surama Padhy adjourned the House multiple times in an attempt to restore order. The session was first suspended till 11:30 AM, then extended to 12:30 PM, and finally adjourned till 4 PM as the uproar continued unabated.
Members from the Indian National Congress and the Biju Janata Dal staged protests inside the House, raising slogans and demanding the resignation of Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling. The Opposition has alleged gross negligence in hospital safety measures and held the minister accountable for the incident.
The protests, which have been ongoing since March 17, have significantly disrupted legislative business, with Opposition members refusing to allow proceedings until their demands are met.
Amid the escalating tensions, an all-party meeting has been convened to discuss the situation and explore possible resolutions to the deadlock.
The SCB fire tragedy has triggered a major political storm in Odisha, with mounting pressure on the government to ensure accountability and improve safety standards in healthcare institutions.
