Five killed, eight injured as speeding truck mows down motorcycles on NH in Berhampur
Bhubaneswar, Jan 31: A tragic road accident claimed the lives of five people and left at least eight others injured after a truck collided with multiple motorcycles on National Highway near Haladiapadar Square in Berhampur on Saturday.
According to preliminary reports, the truck was allegedly moving on the wrong side of the highway when it rammed into three motorcycles coming from the opposite direction. The impact was so severe that the victims suffered fatal head injuries, leading to the death of five persons on the spot. The injured were immediately rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Doctors said the condition of some of the injured is critical.
The accident led to scenes of chaos at the spot, with bodies lying on the road for several hours. The mishap caused a massive traffic jam on the busy National Highway, disrupting vehicular movement for a long time. Hundreds of vehicles remained stranded as police struggled to clear the road and manage the situation.
Senior police officials and district administration personnel rushed to the site. An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of the accident and to identify the deceased.
