Odisha shifts to tetra packs for liquor sales under revised excise policy

Bhubaneswar, Feb 21: In a significant move aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, the Odisha government has decided to introduce tetra packs for liquor sales, replacing traditional glass bottles. Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan informed the Odisha Legislative Assembly about the policy change while responding to a query on Saturday.

The Minister’s reply came after Champua MLA Sanatan Mahakud sought clarification regarding packaging norms under the state’s revised excise policy. Harichandan stated that the government has amended the policy to permit the sale of liquor in tetra packs, similar to those used for fruit juices and other beverages.

He explained that tetra packs are considered a safer and more eco-friendly alternative to glass bottles, which often contribute to environmental hazards when improperly disposed of. The new packaging is expected to reduce waste, minimise the risk of breakage-related injuries, and support the state’s broader sustainability objectives.

While allowing tetra packs, the Minister also stressed the importance of reusing and recycling glass bottles wherever feasible, urging institutions and individuals to adopt responsible waste management practices.
