Odisha Assembly adjourned till 4 PM amid opposition uproar
Bhubaneswar, Sep 28: The Odisha Legislative Assembly was adjourned till 4 pm on Monday after repeated disruptions over the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026, and alleged errors in school textbooks.
The House resumed its Monsoon Session after a one-day break, but normal proceedings were disrupted soon after the session began. Opposition members from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress raised slogans and staged protests near the Speaker’s podium, demanding discussions on the MMDR amendment and the textbook issue.
Despite repeated appeals from Speaker Surama Padhy for the protesting members to return to their seats and allow the proceedings to continue, the protests persisted. The Speaker subsequently adjourned the House till 11.30 am.
When the Assembly reconvened, Opposition legislators again raised slogans and continued their demonstrations, preventing normal legislative business from proceeding.
The MMDR Amendment Act has been a major point of contention during the ongoing Monsoon Session, with the BJD and Congress seeking its withdrawal and raising concerns over its implications for Odisha. The Opposition has also been demanding accountability over errors detected in newly introduced school textbooks.
The disruption followed similar scenes during earlier sittings of the session, when Opposition members entered the Well of the House and raised slogans over the MMDR Act and textbook errors.
Amid continued slogan-shouting and disorder, the Speaker was eventually compelled to adjourn the proceedings till 4 pm. The MMDR amendment and textbook controversy are expected to remain key issues during the remaining days of the session.
