Bhubaneswar, Sep 25: A seven- to eight-month-old tiger cub was rescued from Khaparkhai village near Similipal Sanctuary in Mayurbhanj district on Thursday night after it entered a human habitation area, forest officials said on Friday.

According to a press note issued by the Similipal Tiger Reserve authorities, the cub first entered a cattle shed at Khaparkhai village under Thakurmunda Range of the Karanjia Forest Division on the night of September 24.

The village is located close to the Similipal Sanctuary. After leaving the cattle shed, the cub reportedly remained inside an unoccupied house until Friday morning, prompting forest officials to intervene.

During examination, officials found that the cub required veterinary attention. It was subsequently rescued and placed in a cage at around noon on Friday. The animal will remain under observation while receiving necessary veterinary care.

Forest officials said the cub would be shifted to a larger enclosure at Jamuna, located inside the core area of the Similipal Tiger Reserve, after it recovers and attains the required level of fitness.

The cub will eventually be released into the wild once forest authorities determine that it is capable of hunting and surviving independently.

The rescue operation was undertaken following the tiger cub’s movement into a village area adjoining the sanctuary. Officials are monitoring its health and behaviour during the rehabilitation process to ensure a safe transition back into its natural habitat.
