2,674 illegal firearms cases registered in Odisha in 23 months
Bhubaneswar, Sep 28: As many as 2,674 cases related to illegal firearms were registered and 3,388 persons arrested in Odisha during special enforcement drives conducted across the state over a period of 23 months, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the Assembly on Monday.
In a written reply to a question by Baliguda MLA Chakramani Kanhar, Majhi said the cases were registered between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2026, as part of special drives conducted across various police districts.
During the operations, police seized 509 pistols, 37 Mausers and 346 guns and other firearms. The Chief Minister said the state government has also launched Operation Daman to curb the illegal and illicit arms trade and take action against habitual offenders.
Majhi further informed the House that special drives were also conducted to execute pending Non-Bailable Warrants (NBWs). Between May 15 and May 31, 2026, police executed 2,973 NBWs, while 2,820 warrants were disposed of for other reasons.
In another special drive aimed at reducing the pendency of cases, 7,744 cases were disposed of between September 6 and September 15, 2026.
The Chief Minister said such enforcement drives are being regularly conducted in all police districts and under the Commissionerate Police, as directed by the state government.
He said operations including ‘Dharpagarh’, ‘Garuda’, ‘Prahar’ and ‘Daman’ have been undertaken to execute warrants, apprehend absconding accused persons, curb illegal arms trafficking, act against habitual offenders and reduce pending cases.
Operation Daman is currently being conducted across Odisha from September 21 to 30, with police targeting illegal arms, habitual offenders, illicit activities and absconding accused persons.
