Cold wave intensifies across Odisha, mercury to dip further after Christmas: IMD
Bhubaneswar, Dec 23: A severe cold wave has tightened its grip across Odisha, with temperatures dropping sharply in several parts of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the mercury is likely to fall further from Christmas onwards as dry and cold north-westerly winds continue to sweep through the region.
According to IMD data, Koraput recorded the lowest temperature at a biting 6.3 degrees Celsius. Other interior and hilly areas also experienced intense cold, with Daringbadi registering 7°C, followed by Nabarangpur at 8°C and Phulbani at 8.5°C. Jharsuguda recorded 9.4°C, Boudh 9.5°C, Angul 9.6°C, while coastal and urban centres were comparatively warmer, with Bhubaneswar recording 11.9°C and Cuttack 12.4°C.
In addition to the falling temperatures, the IMD has issued a warning for dense fog in several districts, including Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Sambalpur and Sonepur, from December 25 to 27. The fog is expected to reduce visibility, particularly during early morning hours.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious while travelling, as foggy conditions may disrupt road and rail traffic. The weather department has predicted similar cold and dry conditions over the next few days and urged people, especially the elderly and children, to take adequate precautions to stay warm.
