Koraput records coldest December night of 2025 as mercury dips to 4.8°C
Bhubaneswar, Dec 26: Koraput witnessed its coldest December night of the year on December 26, 2025, with the minimum temperature plunging to 4.8°C, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The sharp drop in mercury has intensified the cold wave conditions across the district, causing discomfort for residents, especially during late night and early morning hours.
IMD data show that December nights in Koraput have remained consistently chilly over the past 15 years. In 2011, the lowest temperature was recorded at 9°C on December 27, followed by 9.2°C on December 28 in 2012. The temperature dropped further to 8.1°C on December 16 in 2013 and 6.4°C on December 22 in 2014. Subsequent years also saw cold conditions, with 7.5°C in 2015, 8.4°C in 2016, and 7.9°C in 2017.
The coldest December night was first recorded in 2018 when the temperature touched 4.8°C on December 30. Similar patterns continued in later years, with lows ranging between 6°C and 9°C. This year’s 4.8°C on December 26 matches the 2018 record, highlighting the persistence of severe winter conditions in Koraput.
