Custodial death in Cuttack: Three police personnel suspended
Bhubaneswar, Sept 23: A case of alleged custodial death at Choudwar police station in Cuttack has triggered outrage, leading to the suspension of ACP Biswa Ranjan Sahu, Sub-Inspector Niranjan Goda, and constable Kamal Lochan Majhi. The action came after Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi directed immediate suspension following a complaint lodged by the deceased’s wife.
The victim, identified as Rasananda Nayak (38) of Shankarpur village in Dhenkanal district, was detained on Sunday night in connection with a bike theft case. His wife Puja was informed the next day that her husband had fallen ill and was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital. However, upon reaching the hospital, she found him dead, sparking allegations of torture.
Nayak’s family claimed he was brutally assaulted in custody despite confessing to the theft and returning two stolen bikes. They alleged severe beating led to his death.
Police sources, however, stated that eight criminal cases were pending against Nayak in Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Cuttack, and Bhubaneswar. Meanwhile, Cuttack DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo assured that a fair and thorough probe will be conducted, and stringent action taken if custodial torture is proven.
