Asian Games 2023: Avinash Sable shines bright with gold in 3000m steeplechase

New Delhi, Oct 1: Avinash Sable etched his name into Asian Games history on Sunday as he secured India's first-ever gold medal in the Men's 3000m Steeplechase. Leading the race from start to finish, he clocked an impressive Games Record time of 8 minutes 19.50 seconds at Hangzhou.
This historic victory marked India's first gold medal in Athletics at the Hangzhou Asian Games and their fourth medal overall, all achieved on the third day of Athletics competitions.
Hailing from Maharashtra and serving in the Army, Sable took control of the race right from the beginning, swiftly seizing the lead during the second lap. He then gradually widened the gap between himself and the pursuing pack.
Remarkably, Sable chose not to push his limits to secure gold. Instead, he strategically moderated his pace, avoiding any unnecessary risks. Given that this was his final race of the season, Sable opted for a prudent approach, determined to clinch his first gold in a major event.
