Odisha Government reschedules Savitri Amavasya holiday to May 26

Bhubaneswar, May 23: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has officially announced a revision in the state government holiday calendar, rescheduling the holiday for Savitri Amavasya from May 27 to May 26, 2025. The decision follows confirmation from leading religious institutions that the correct date for the observance is May 26.

Originally, the holiday had been set for May 27. However, after consultations with the Puri Mukti Mandap, a respected religious council, along with other almanac and astrological authorities, the state government was informed of the correct date. The change ensures that the observance aligns with traditional and religious practices.

Savitri Amavasya is an important ritual day for married Hindu women in Odisha, who pray for the well-being and long life of their husbands. Women fast and perform puja under sacred trees, following customs passed down through generations.

In light of the religious significance and to prevent confusion, the Chief Minister promptly approved the revision. The updated holiday schedule has been communicated to all government departments and public institutions to ensure smooth implementation.
