Jajpur cracks down on unhygienic food vendors after mass food poisoning
Bhubaneswar, May 5: The Jajpur Municipal Administration has launched a massive crackdown on unhygienic food practices across urban areas, ordering all dahibara stalls, street food vendors, and fast food centres to remain closed for the next seven days.
The stringent action follows a major food poisoning incident in the Dasarathpur area of Jajpur district, where more than 90 people reportedly fell ill after consuming contaminated dahibara and other fast food items. Victims experienced severe symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, and acute stomach ailments.
A special enforcement team led by Chief Health Officer Dr Pradeep Khuntia conducted raids in several localities, including Kusuma, Medical Square, and Jodikua. During the inspections, officials collected food samples from multiple outlets, which have been sent for laboratory testing to determine the source of contamination.
Many affected individuals were initially treated at nearby health centres, while those in critical condition were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Jajpur for advanced care.
The municipal administration has urged residents to consume boiled water and maintain proper hygiene to prevent further health risks. Authorities have also warned of strict action against vendors found violating food safety norms, stating that those responsible for selling contaminated or substandard food will face legal consequences.
