SCB Medical College and Hospital achieves milestone with first liver transplantation
Cuttack, April 4: SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack celebrated a significant achievement as its medical team successfully conducted the institution's inaugural liver transplantation on Wednesday.
Reports indicate that a 35-year-old woman from Tigiria, situated in Cuttack district, selflessly donated a portion of her liver to provide a new lease of life to her 45-year-old husband. The complex procedure, lasting nine hours, saw the woman's liver transplanted onto her husband's, facilitated by a collaborative effort between SCB and the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), Hyderabad.
The intricate surgery, conducted from 8 am to 5:30 pm, involved a team of 30 medical professionals under the leadership of esteemed liver transplant surgeon Dr. P. Balachandran Menon. Notably, the advanced procedure took place in the specialized modular operation theater within the trauma building on the hospital premises.
In a remarkable display of love and sacrifice, the wife generously donated 60 percent of her liver to save her husband's life.
With this successful liver transplantation, SCB Medical College and Hospital has etched its name as the first government healthcare facility in the state to commence liver transplant surgeries, marking a significant milestone in its medical service offerings.
