Odisha Begins Search for New DGP Ahead of Khurania's Retirement

Bhubaneswar, July 24: The Odisha government has initiated the process of appointing a new Director General of Police (DGP) as the tenure of incumbent DGP Y.B. Khurania is set to conclude on August 16, 2026. The move marks the beginning of a crucial transition in the leadership of the state's police force.

As per the established procedure, the state government has coordinated with the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which is responsible for preparing a panel of eligible senior IPS officers for the top post. The final appointment will be made by the Odisha government after the UPSC completes its selection process.

The race for the DGP's post has gained significance amid a shortage of senior IPS officers in Odisha. The state continues to face vacancies in its sanctioned IPS cadre, making the selection of the next police chief an important administrative decision. Senior officers with extensive experience in law enforcement, intelligence, and public administration are believed to be under consideration.

Y.B. Khurania, a 1990-batch IPS officer, assumed office as Odisha's DGP in August 2024 after serving on central deputation. During his tenure, he focused on strengthening law and order, intensifying anti-Maoist operations, enhancing cybercrime investigations, and promoting the use of modern technology in policing. His leadership also emphasized improving public safety, coastal security, and police modernization across the state.

The incoming DGP will be tasked with leading the Odisha Police at a time when the force faces evolving challenges, including cybercrime, organized crime, internal security concerns, and the need for greater technological integration in policing. The new police chief is also expected to continue ongoing modernization initiatives while ensuring effective crime prevention and public confidence in law enforcement.

Officials indicated that the appointment process is progressing in accordance with established guidelines, and the name of the new DGP is expected to be announced before the current chief demits office. The leadership transition is expected to ensure continuity in policing and administrative stability across Odisha.

The appointment of the state's next police chief is being closely watched, as it will shape the future direction of law enforcement and security administration in Odisha over the coming years.
