Three Grand Chariots Ready for Puri Rath Yatra, Devotees Await Divine Journey
Puri, July 16: The sacred town of Puri is fully prepared for the world-renowned Rath Yatra as the three majestic chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra stand ready outside the Singhadwara of the Jagannath Temple. The completion of the chariots marks the final phase of preparations for one of India's largest and most revered religious festivals, which attracts lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad every year.
The construction of the chariots began on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya and continued for several weeks under the supervision of hereditary artisans and temple servitors. Following centuries-old traditions, the chariots were built using specially selected timber brought from designated forests in Odisha. Every stage of the construction, from shaping the wooden wheels to erecting the towering structures, was carried out according to sacred rituals and traditional craftsmanship passed down through generations.
The three chariots are unique in their size and design. Lord Jagannath's chariot, Nandighosa, is the tallest and is fitted with 16 wheels. Lord Balabhadra's Taladhwaja has 14 wheels, while Devi Subhadra's Darpadalana is built with 12 wheels. Each chariot has been decorated with colourful cloth canopies, wooden carvings, traditional motifs and sacred symbols that reflect Odisha's rich cultural and religious heritage. The vibrant appearance of the chariots has added to the festive atmosphere in the pilgrim town.
As preparations reach their final stage, the Odisha government and the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) have made elaborate arrangements to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of the annual festival. Extensive security measures have been put in place, including the deployment of thousands of police personnel, surveillance through CCTV cameras and drones, dedicated emergency response teams and medical camps at strategic locations. Crowd management plans have also been finalised to facilitate the movement of the massive number of devotees expected to participate in the festival.
The district administration has strengthened sanitation, drinking water and public convenience facilities throughout Puri. Traffic regulations have been enforced, and designated parking areas have been created to minimise congestion during the event. Indian Railways has introduced additional special trains connecting Puri with various parts of the country, while transport authorities have arranged extra bus services to accommodate the surge in pilgrims.
The Rath Yatra is one of the most significant festivals dedicated to Lord Jagannath. During the grand procession, the sibling deities will leave the sanctum of the Jagannath Temple and travel on their respective chariots along the Grand Road, popularly known as Bada Danda, to the Gundicha Temple. The ceremonial pulling of the chariots by thousands of devotees is regarded as an act of immense spiritual merit and devotion.
With the towering chariots now standing in their full splendour and the holy town echoing with devotional chants and preparations, excitement among devotees has reached its peak. The annual festival once again promises to showcase Odisha's timeless traditions, spiritual heritage and cultural grandeur while bringing together millions of people in an extraordinary celebration of faith, unity and devotion.
