IMD issues red alert for heavy rain in Odisha; wet spell likely to continue till July 20
Bhubaneswar, July 15: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Warning for parts of Odisha on July 16, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy showers under the influence of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. The weather agency has predicted that widespread rainfall will continue across the state until July 20.
According to the IMD's midday bulletin, Jagatsinghpur and Puri districts are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at several places, with extremely heavy rainfall expected at isolated locations on Wednesday.
An Orange Warning has been issued for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Kandhamal, Khurda, Nayagarh and Ganjam, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely. A Yellow Warning has also been sounded for Balasore, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Rayagada and Gajapati districts.
The IMD said the wet spell will continue on July 17, with Orange Alerts issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. Rainfall intensity is expected to reduce gradually from July 19, although isolated heavy showers are still likely in parts of northern Odisha.
The weather office has advised people living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain alert, as continuous rainfall may lead to waterlogging, localized flooding and disruption of normal life in several districts.
