Bhubaneswar, July 15: A young woman died after allegedly setting herself on fire at Shantinagar Lane-5 under the jurisdiction of Badabazar Police Station in Brahmapur on Wednesday. The tragic incident has left residents of the locality shocked, while police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.

According to preliminary reports, the woman, a resident of the area, allegedly poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze. She sustained severe burn injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

As her condition deteriorated, doctors referred her to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced medical care. However, she succumbed to her injuries while being shifted to the hospital, sources said.

Following the incident, a team from Badabazar Police Station reached the spot and began an investigation. Police are examining all possible angles to ascertain the reason behind the woman's extreme step. Statements of family members and local residents are likely to be recorded as part of the inquiry.

The body will undergo postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Police said the investigation is in its initial stage, and the circumstances surrounding the incident will become clearer after collecting evidence and speaking to those close to the deceased.
