President Droupadi Murmu Presents Padma Awards to Distinguished Personalities at Rashtrapati Bhavan
New Delhi : President Droupadi Murmu on Monday presented the prestigious Padma Awards during the first Civil Investiture Ceremony of 2026 at the Ganatantra Mandap in Rashtrapati Bhavan. The ceremony celebrated individuals from diverse fields who have made remarkable contributions to the nation through their work in art, literature, public affairs, sports, medicine, science and social service.
The Padma Awards, regarded as among India’s highest civilian honours, are conferred in three categories — Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, senior ministers, diplomats and other distinguished guests.
During the ceremony, the President presented a total of 66 awards, including two Padma Vibhushan honours, six Padma Bhushan awards and 58 Padma Shri recognitions. The awardees represented a wide range of professions and backgrounds, reflecting the country’s diversity and excellence across sectors.
One of the most emotional moments of the ceremony came when legendary actor Dharmendra was posthumously honoured with the Padma Vibhushan for his immense contribution to Indian cinema spanning several decades. The award was received on his behalf by actor and BJP MP Hema Malini. The audience applauded the recognition of the veteran actor’s contribution to the film industry.
Prominent industrialist and banker Uday Kotak received the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to trade and industry. Eminent classical violinist N. Rajam was also among the major award recipients for her contribution to Indian classical music.
The ceremony also highlighted achievements in sports and regional cinema. Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur was conferred the Padma Shri for her accomplishments in cricket and her role in promoting women’s sports in the country. Veteran Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee was honoured with the Padma Shri for his long-standing contribution to Bengali cinema.
Several other noted personalities from the entertainment industry were included in this year’s honours list. Actors Mammootty and R. Madhavan, along with renowned playback singer Alka Yagnik, were among the awardees recognised by the government for their contributions to Indian arts and culture.
The Padma Awards for 2026 were announced earlier this year on the eve of Republic Day. The government approved a total of 131 Padma Awards, including several posthumous honours and awards for women achievers from across the country.
The investiture ceremony once again showcased the nation’s appreciation for individuals whose dedication and excellence have left a lasting impact on society and inspired millions across India.
