V. D. Satheesan Set To Lead Kerala After UDF Victory
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has officially selected V. D. Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala following the alliance’s strong performance in the 2026 Assembly elections. The announcement came after several rounds of discussions among senior Congress leaders and alliance partners in Thiruvananthapuram and New Delhi.
Satheesan, who served as the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, emerged as the unanimous choice of the UDF leadership after successfully spearheading the opposition campaign against the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). His appointment marks a major political shift in Kerala after years of LDF rule under outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
A veteran Congress leader from the Paravur constituency, Satheesan is known for his sharp speeches in the Assembly, organisational skills, and aggressive stance on governance issues, corruption allegations, and public welfare concerns. Political observers believe his leadership played a crucial role in reviving the Congress party’s prospects in the state.
Sources within the Congress party said the final decision was made after consultations between top national leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. Senior UDF leaders also expressed confidence that Satheesan’s leadership would help ensure stable governance and faster implementation of the alliance’s election promises.
Celebrations erupted across several parts of Kerala soon after the announcement, with Congress workers gathering outside party offices and distributing sweets. Supporters described the development as the beginning of a “new political chapter” for the state.
Satheesan is expected to take oath as Chief Minister in the coming days along with members of his cabinet. The new government is likely to focus on employment generation, infrastructure development, welfare schemes, and improving the state’s financial condition.
The leadership transition is being viewed as one of the most significant political developments in Kerala in recent years, as the Congress-led alliance prepares to return to power with promises of administrative reforms and inclusive development.
